On Thursday, The Galleries at CSU unveiled their first shows of the school year in collaboration with area arts organizations ARTneo and the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve (AAWR).

The north and center galleries feature a show titled "Unending Journeys: The Works of Samuel Butnik." The late Samuel Butnik is a Cleveland native and a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Art who focused his work on geometric, abstract interpretations of landscapes. In the south gallery is Andean Spirit: Past and Present by Peruvian advocate for indigenous people’s rights, Ana Maria Pizarro. Pizarro is a famous artist in South America whose work depicts the customs and culture of Peru.

Robert Thurmer, Director and Curator of The Galleries at CSU, says that the collaboration between the galleries and the two local art organizations can open many doors for students.

“Both of these organizations have a teaching mission and also have internship opportunities for Cleveland State University students,” Thurmer said.

ARTneo is a museum with a rich history in Cleveland whose mission is “to preserve, research, collect, exhibit, document and educate about the significant visual art and architecture” in Northeast Ohio.

Similarly, the AAWR works to preserve the bodies of works created by visual artists in Ohio by exhibiting, providing educational programs, and documenting the heritage of Northeast Ohio.

Though the organizations are art focused, internship opportunities are not limited solely to art majors.

“There are also other internships available in terms of marketing, non-profit business administration and public administration, so there is opportunity for many Cleveland State students to find internship opportunities,” Thurmer said.

In the past, students who participated in internships with ARTneo and AAWR went on to find employment with the organizations.
The shows in The Galleries at CSU will run from now until October 3 and are just a small glimpse into what these organizations contribute to the community.

For more information on how to get involved with ARTneo or AAWR see Robert Thurmer at The Galleries at CSU or visit the organizations websites artneo.org and artistsarchives.org
