CSU adverts coming soon to a theater near you

By Kevin Alquist

Cleveland State campusCleveland State University will be advertised on the big screen from Thanksgiving through Dec. 4, as University Marketing will show commercial spots that are currently on cable television during previews in movie theaters.

This is one element of this fall’s marketing campaign that Cleveland State has dubbed a “University for the Times.” University Marketing hopes that the commercials, one of which appeals to incoming freshmen and the other focuses on graduate, non-traditional and transfer students, will reach a larger audience when they are shown in theaters.

Kevin Ziegler, director of strategic communications at Cleveland State, said that the advertising slogan builds on the university’s Engaged Learning philosophy that grants students access to 200 academic programs that lead to thousands of internships and co-op opportunities each year.

“Our focus is on connecting students to ideas in the classroom and to hands-on experiences that prepare them for their careers,” Ziegler said. “CSU gives students an edge because of our ability to provide the opportunities for learning and experience that employers want.”

The commercials were filmed on campus at the end of August by Cleveland-based marketing agency WYSE and New York City-based director Bruce VanDusen. Participants in the commercials were students and professors that were both auditioned and filmed on location by random selection.

The commercials feature shots of students and faculty on campus, in and out of the classroom, around the city in locations, such as East 4th Street, on the sports fields and in student residencies. They encourage the idea of community and that Cleveland State is an important part of each student’s future.

They can be seen on YouTube on the CSUchannel.

Also part of the “University of the Times” advertising campaign, are outdoor billboards along major highways around Northeast Ohio, spots on Pandora Radio, traffic report sponsorship on a variety of local radio stations and print and online media sources.

A new advertising campaign will be released in early 2015.
