Business school dean steps down in April

By Kevin Alquist

Joseph Mazzola of the Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State University stepped down from his position as dean on April 15 citing personal reasons.

Hired in 2013 after serving three years as a highly regarded professor of business at Belk College of Business at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Mazzola was not specific about the reason for his departure.

"He approached [Provost Deirdre Mageean] and said he couldn't balance his personal and family needs with his responsibilities as dean," Cleveland State spokesman Rob Spademan said.

According to Spademan, Mazzola will continue to work on research projects such as TedX Cleveland through the end of his contract, which is up at the end of June 2015.

"There will be some other projects that he will be working on but they are unknown at this point," Spademan said. "Any other projects will be assigned to him by [Mageean]."

For the time being, Richard Reed has been appointed as interim associate dean chief operating officer. Reed is from the management and labor department of the business school.

Spademan said that the administration will continue to weigh its options for a replacement at the position. It is not known at this time whether or not Reed will be chosen as the dean of the business school moving forward, but he is an option.
