CSU performs Broadway favorite

By: Aziza Doleh

Cleveland State University's theatre and dance department will present theBroadway piece “Cabaret” this November as the fall show.

“Cabaret” originally opened in 1963. Its candor and ebb with classic music is based on original short stories by Christopher Isherwood called the “Berlin Stories.” Based on those characters of the “Berlin Stories,” later turned into a stage play “I Am a Camera” by John van Druton, the musical “Cabaret” emerged

“The musical was revamped and reimagined in the mid-90s first in England then on Broadway as the version we are currently doing,” said Russ Borski director of Cabaret at Cleveland State.

“Cabaret” takes place on New Years Eve 1929 in Berlin about a want-to-be writer named Cliff after arriving from Paris. His character is trying to find his voice as a writer and within a few moments is befriended by a man Ernst and goes to a club called the Kit Cat Club, where Cabaret is being produced featuring headliner Sally Bowls. All characters from Cabaret and the Berlin Stories converge in the show Cabaret.

“The show is hard edged, lean and muscular production of Cabaret that is really what we are doing here within the department,” said Borski

The entire cast includes 19 Cleveland State theatre and dance students along with students from Project 60. The musical director is David Robison and choreographer is Amy Compton, who is also in the theatre and dance department. Music and lyrics are by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff.

Emma Clark, senior theatre and dance major, will play the lead female role “Sally Bowls.” Nathaniel Leeson, senior theatre and dance major, plays Emcee, lead male role.

“She has become a triple threat through the program over the past couple of years, I think right now this is the role of her life,” said Borski. “Our Emcee, Nathaniel who has worked his way up in the department through roles and no exits, he was in American

Dream and he is the perfect Emcee as far as I’m concerned.”
Cleveland State normally does not do musicals. The last time the department put on a musical show was four years ago, which is why the Cabaret has been chosen as well as the show’s director Russ Borski has wanted to do the show.

“The students, staff and crew all have been committed and have been rehearsing for three weeks and production is going great,” said Borski.

Cleveland State’s production of “Cabaret” will run November 14-24 in Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre - Allen Theatre Complex.
