Women’s hoops to host summer camp

By Nicole Drake

Cleveland State University’s athletics department will host the 12th annual women’s basketball individual day camp at the Wolstein Center from June 23-25.
Shannon Schur, in her 11th year with the women’s basketball team, is the camp organizer.

“We expect to have around 50 campers this year,” Schur said.
It will provide instruction focusing on the fundamentals of basketball for girls grades 3-12.
Participants receive individual and group instruction, drills and a t-shirt.

Camp days run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are extended hours for early drop offs and late pick-ups from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kate Peterson Abiad, head coach of the Cleveland State women’s basketball team, served as the coach for the Athletes in Action camp held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1992 and has worked a variety of other basketball camps.

“It’s a lot of drill work and very little gameplay,” Peterson Abiad said.

Students will work on post moves and low-block post moves. Guards will learn proper footwork, dribbling, driving and passing.

Other skills taught include form shooting, jump shooting, shooting off the dribble, rebounding and defense.

“These young kids are surrounded by Division I coaches and players, which are the highest level of players, and I think the camp gives a good opportunity for that,” Peterson Abiad said.

According to Peterson Abiad, there has been a 50 percent return rate for campers in the past, and the goal is to target the younger grades.

Signups are held online or through the invitational brochure.
There is an attendance fee of $125 and Cleveland State employees receive a discounted fee of $100.
