Men’s hoops defeats Toledo in last-minute rally, improve record

December 6, 2012

By Dan Stanton

The Cleveland State Vikings men’s basketball team made a dramatic last-minute turnaround to take down the University of Toledo Rockets 78-73 last Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Wolstein Center.

Toledo was first on the board, and the Vikings countered immediately to tie the game at 2-2 in the first minute of the game. But after another score by the Rockets, the Vikings would spend the next 39 minutes of the game trailing or tied with Toledo.

Things did not look good for the Vikings in the first half as shot after shot failed to make it through the hoop, while Toledo picked up the rebounds and took them back across the court to score. By the middle of the first half, the Rockets had a 10-point lead over the Vikings.

With two minutes to go in the first half, Cleveland State cut their deficit to two points, but Toledo came back to make the score 32-26 at halftime.

The Vikings started to turn things around in the second half, scoring two and 3-pointers and tying the game 39-39 with 16 minutes on the clock. That tie was short-lived as Toledo kept making their shots while the Vikings did not. Halfway through the second half, the Rockets were leading by ninepoints.

The Vikings played valiantly and whittled away at the Rockets’ lead to tie the game once again with two and a half minutes on the game clock.

Two good free throws from Toledo gave them the lead once again, but the Vikings found their footing and tied the game 71-71. After a minute of no scoring from either team, Cleveland State took their first lead of the game with 31 seconds left on the clock. From there, it was all Cleveland State, who kept their lead and won with a final score of 78 Cleveland State, 73 Toledo.
