Volleyball crowned Horizon League champs

November 26, 2012

By Stephanie Metzger

Two weeks ago, the Cleveland State University volleyball team secured possession of the Horizon League regular season title. On Sunday, the team added the bling of the Horizon League championship trophy to its showcase.

The Vikings hosted the 2012 Horizon League Volleyball Championship at Woodling Gymnasium last weekend, where they were seeded first, earning them a bye into the semifinals.

The fourth-seeded University of Loyola Ramblers were slated to face the Vikings in the semifinals. The Ramblers defeated the fifth-seeded University of Green Bay Phoenix to reach the semifinals, but the Vikings proved to be too much for them.

The Vikings swept the Phoenix in three-straight sets on Saturday. Senior Kara Koch led the Vikings with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Marie Frease and Maggie Hannon posted nine kills apiece. Freshman Dayna Roberts posted 35 assists.

With set scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-17 respectively, the Vikings earned their chance at the Horizon League championship title and they advanced to the finals to face the University of Illinois
Chicago Flames, who were seeded second in the tournament.

The Flames took the first set 21-25, but the Vikings regrouped soon after to snag the three remaining sets of the match. It’s been five years since the Vikings were crowned league champions, despite five trips to the final round in the last six years.

Koch added another 23 kills and 11 digs to her tally, which helped her earn the title of Tournament MVP. The honor adds to Koch’s lengthy resume, as she has also been named Horizon League Player of the Year and named to the league First Team.

Joining Koch on the First Team are Frease and Medvetz, while Roberts was named to the All-Newcomer Team.

Next, the Vikings await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will reveal their opponent in the NCAA national tournament. The announcement will come on Sunday, Nov. 25.
