Men’s soccer tops Belmont, secures fifth win of season

By Stephanie Metzger

October 11, 2012

The Cleveland State Vikings men’s soccer team defeated the Belmont Bruins in a 4-0 offensive shutout on Wednesday at Krenzler Field.

The two teams seemed well-matched through most of the first half, but the Vikings tipped the scales 40 minutes in as Cazz Warren scored his first of two goals.

The Vikings’ offensive output carried right into the second half as they scored within the first minute of the half on a goal by Jacob Naumann off the bench.

Warren struck again for CSU’s third goal of the afternoon on anassist from Cristian Arboleda and the fourth goal of the match occurred with just under 10 minutes remaining on a shot by Mike Derezic.

Vikings’ coach Ali Kazemaini felt that his team could not have scripted a better story for the day.

“We needed one of these games where we kind of get everybody involved and score some goals," Kazemaini said. "I thought it was a perfect day for us."

Naumann, who entered the game as a substitute, scored his first goal on the season off the bench. Kazemaini noted that Naumann’s goal was a pivotal point in the game, because it gave the team a boost of confidence.

“From there, it was just a matter of whether we could get the third goal or not, and today, we did,” said Kazemaini.

Kazemaini also noted the importance of Warren’s first goal, which set the tone for the remainder of the game.

“It’s just so important to get that first goal to get ahead of the game where you can just kind of relax and express yourself a bit,” Kazemaini explained.

Warren, a senior from Toronto, Ontario, leads the Vikings in points with eight. He leads the Vikings with two game-winning goals this season.

Next, the Vikings begin a series of Horizon League match-ups as they head to Valparaiso before hosting Milwaukee next weekend.
