CSU appoints Mazzola as new dean of the College of Business

By Brittney Schmies

After an extensive national search that involved 30 candidates, Cleveland State University has appointed a new dean to the Monte Ahuja College of Business. Dr. Joseph Mazzola will fill the position.

“I am honored to be appointed as the dean of Monte Ahuja College of Business at Cleveland State,” Mazzola said. “This is an awesome role to be asked to fill at a growing and exciting university of such strategic importance to the region."

Mazzola comes to Cleveland State from the Belk College of Business at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. While there, he served as dean for three years and was the Belk Distinguished Professor of Business.

He holds three degrees including a Ph.D in Industrial Administration and a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University. His career spans about 30 years during which he has held various positions including executive dean of faculty at the Mcdonough School of Business at Georgetown University and tenured faculty in the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He has also published two books and many scholarly articles on the topics of operations management, management science, mathematical programming and manufacturing and global supply chains.

Using his wide-range knowledge of the area and the vision statement of Cleveland State Mazzola plans to align the steps already being taken by Cleveland State with new steps to continue the positive growth of the college.

“We are starting at a great place and are already moving rapidly in the right direction,” Mazzola said. “Still, we have a great deal to build together, there will be a lot of hard work, and undoubtedly some challenges ahead, but it will be exciting to work toward our visions.”

Ultimately, Mazzola’s plan for the Monte Ahuja College of Business is to be recognized for being in the best-of-the-best of colleges of business.

“We will be a college that the Cleveland business community recognizes as the “go-to” business school for outstand, well-educated, and creative business leadership talent, as well as for leading-edge business practices.”

Mazzola’s appointment will become effective July 1 where he will also take on the role of Monte Ahuja Endowed Chair.

“I am also honored to be appointed to the Monte Ahuja Endowed Chair,” Mazzola said. “Academic scholarship is at the heart of what we do as academics—how we serve our students in advancing their knowledge and how we contribute to the creation and application of knowledge.”
