Softball season begins

By Sarah Shannon

February 16, 2012

CSU’s softball team has a new look this year.

There are many new faces on the team this year. Coach Angie Nicholson noted this,

“We’re a young team with four seniors and nine underclassmen, but this is a hard-working group that has a lot of talent and has shown me a lot in the fall.”

One returning team member is Dara Toman, junior, who will play first base this season.

Andrea Nagy“Dara seems to have a different mind set this season,” Nicholson said. “She has always been a kid who works extremely hard, but I would say she’s working harder than I’ve ever seen her work before.”

Being in the middle of the line-up, not only are there expectations for her offensive plays, she is also expected to play solid defense.

Toman received the preseason award of the first team All-Horizon League selection.
Another returning teammate is Andrea Nagy, senior, who will be playing second base this season. Last season, Nagy played shortstop.

“Andrea has always had a good glove, and she is someone we’re counting on because she brings a lot of speed to the table,” Nicholson said about one of her four returning seniors.

The team will have five tournaments in Feb. and March to prepare for the Horizon League schedule.

They traveled to South Carolina this past weekend and played Western Kentucky, Winthrop, Tennessee State, and South Carolina.

Even though the girls did not bring a win back they showed they are not backing down this season.

The team’s next game will be Feb. 24 against Dayton in Chattanooga, TN.
