#13 seeded Vikings upset #4 seed Wake

By Matthew Grassi

What some thought impossible has become a reality: The 2008-2009 Cleveland State Vikings men’s basketball team qualified for the NCAA tournament field of 64.

It may have taken the Vikings three tries to finally top the Bulldogs, but the fact that the victory sealed Coach Gary Waters’s first conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament made it all the more special for Viking fans young and old.

Not given much of a chance by anyone outside of Viking Hall and Fenn Tower to beat Wake, the Vikings continued their improbable dream season by thoroughly dominating the Demon Deacons 84-69 from whistle to whistle behind a suffocating team defense and Herculean efforts on the offensive end by Cedric Jackson (19 points, 8 assists), Norris Cole (game high 22 points), and J’Nathan Bullock (21 points).
