School records broken, but both swimming teams lose to Ohio State

By Matthew Wilder

Freshmen Carys Behn broke the school record in the 200 yard freestyle swim with a time of one minute and 52.52 seconds. Behn also swam the sixth fastest time in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.39 seconds. However the women lost to Ohio State 178-81. “It was good for our program to swim against big time college athletic programs like Ohio State,” said Head Coach Wally Morton. “They are one of the highlights of our season and a chance for us to see if we can bring it up to their level.”
Another notable performance for the women included Whitney Hickey finishing second place in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 28.38 seconds.
Emily Splain had her season best performance in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 59.92 seconds, finishing third in that event.
The men defeated Miami of Ohio but were unable to defeat Notre Dame (Ind.) and Ohio State.
Freshman Mark deSwardt continues to be the talk of the season. In the meet against the Buckeyes, he won the 1000 freestyle and finished second in the 500 freestyle. deSwardt dominated the 1000 yard freestyle with an 11 second victory over the second place finisher.
Jakub Dobies also performed well against OSU. He finished in second place in the 50 yard breastroke with a time of 25.78 seconds. Stephen Grove came in second place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.36 seconds.
