Forum focuses on violent youth

The Urban Child Research Center has a teleconference on youth violence scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15. The teleconference, titled "Partnership for Preventing Violence," is a joint venture brought to the community by the Harvard School of Public Health, Prevention Institute Inc., and the Education Development Center Inc.

The UCRC has five to seven forums during the year beginning in October. The next event will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3. This forum will discuss how to strengthen schools and communities by preventing youth violence.

The teleconference will consist of a panel of local people debating on this issue. A discussion will take place before the forum. Past forums have previously been structured this way as well.

For more information on this event, contact Laura at the UCRC office at (216) 687-5490.

Career Services links students with jobs through VikingNet

Currently 55 companies are registered with VikingNet, an internet-based career development search system offered to CSU students free by the Career Services Center.

VikingNet can be used at CSU or from any computer linked to the Internet. Registering with VikingNet allows students to develop a resume on-line in a convenient, professional template form or to upload one's own resume. It also gives students access to job postings for full-time opportunities and the ability to sign up for on-campus interviews.

The companies on VikingNet check it often, looking for CSU graduating students that match their criteria. The companies are seeking full-time employees and will come to campus for interviews. To be considered students must be registered on VikingNet.

Registering for VikingNet is easy. On the Internet, go to http://www.csuohio.edu/career, click on VikingNet and follow the detailed instructions. Student VikingNet accounts will be active in three business days. VikingNet is open only to junior and senior CSU students.

To get the most out of VikingNet, students should schedule an appointment with a career coordinator to develop their individualized career plan.

Recent surveys can make differences in dining options

Through surveys and suggestion cards the dining service on the campus of Cleveland State University welcomes customer feedback. Recently a survey was passed out so that the dining service could evaluate how the students perceive the service. Menu items, hours, and the overall quality of service are studied. Changes will be based on the response.

Suggestion boxes are located at the Viking hall cafeteria and in the food court. Managers, who walk around the food court and the Viking Hall cafeteria during business hours, will also listen to suggestions. "We like to get an idea of how are customer perceives us," said Tim Jensen, assistant director of dining. "We like to know of any changes, or continuation of things."

The menu at the Viking Hall cafeteria and the food court are based on a four-week cycle. A cycle illustrates what items on the menu sell along with the ones that don't. Based on the cycle and suggestions, the menu will change or stay the same. "This business is customer response," said Jensen. "We want to pinpoint where we can improve our service to meet the students needs."
