Students report their activity and involvement on campus

A second focus of the survey was student activity and involvement on campus. One set of items asked students how often they found themselves in a series of situations on campus, using the following set of responses: almost every weekday (6), a couple times a week (5), once a week (4), about once a month (3), less often (2), almost never (1). As the table shows, the library gets used most often and the cafeteria least often in a student body that is clearly quite task oriented when on campus.

3.52using the library for study or research
3.09using a computer lab on
2.77having coffee or soft drinks in the Cage
2.55using one of the student lounges in UC-University Center
2.19eating in the cafeteria

The number on the left above represents the average frequency of use.

Respondents were asked if they belong to any student organizations. Some 16.1 percent said they did, with a broad range of groups cited. However, only a handful of groups were mentioned more than a couple times. Those groups were the Golden Key National Honor Society, Society of Professional Journalists, Psi Chi, Student Bar Association, and Student Government. Students are more involved in activities off campus, with most respondents citing involvement in a church or church group. In addition, social groups and political groups were mentioned. In addition, students were asked how many sports and other events they went to at CSU last year. As the table shows, attendance is poor at all events. Some 78 percent went to no sports events and almost two thirds reported not going to any other extracurricular activities in the past year. Students cite family constraints and demands by jobs as major hurdles for socializing at school. A fifth of all respondents completely agreed that home and family life restricted their socializing at school and a fourth completely agreed that their job had such consequences.
