Students respond to public and university related issues

One set of items solicited students' opinions about five public issues and several CSU issues, as well as heir political partisanship and poitical philosophy. Students were asked how much they agreed with five statements about public issues Using the 0-10 scale, where 0 means hey completely disagree, 5 is neural and 10 means they completely agree.

6.29CSU should develop more apartments or dorms near campus for students.
6.32There should be more social events to bring faculty and students together on campus.
6.16I would like more opportunities to meet alumni from my academic area.
6.12Michael White is doing a good job as mayor of Cleveland.
6.08Bill Clinton is doing a good job as president.
6.00Affirmative Action is still necessary to help minorities and other groups.
7.26More gun control is needed.
5.61I approve of American policy on Kosovo.

A breakdown by gender shows that men and women students differed on only two of the four items, with women showing more support for gun control and Affirmative Action.

independent, 25.6%;
lean toward Democrat, 31.8%;
strong Democrat, 20%.

Political philosophy
Strong conservative, 4.6%;
lean towards conservative, 14.7%;
moderate or middle-of-the-road, 44.4%;
lean towards liberal, 24.4%;
strong liberal, 12%.
