Cleveland Area Advocacy

Ohio and ESSA

Every Student Succeeds ActMembers of the Cleveland Arts Education Consortium and other organizations in Ohio are encouraging the leaders of the Ohio Department of Education as they work to implement Ohio’s Every Student Succeeds Act to include arts education in their plan, notably in the Title I, Accountability, and Title IV, Part A sections.

Many studies, including the 2011 President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities’ “Re-Investing in Arts Education: Winning America’s Future Through Creative Schools Summary and Recommendations,” report that students are more likely to have stronger academic achievement if arts education is part of their courses of study.

Lois Hetland’s report “Listening to Music Enhances Spatial-Temporal Reasoning” in the Journal of Aesthetic Education (2000) finds that music training is a predictor of phonological awareness and boosts children’s spatial temporal skills and abilities to solve multistep problems in math, engineering and other areas.

It is troubling to see that between 2005-06 and 2014-15 that the number of arts, music and PE teachers in Ohio has declined by 12.3 percent and that statewide teacher-to-student rations have increased. For more information, go to Policy Matters Ohio’s “Number of Ohio’s Vital School Professionals Dwindling” and the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education’s Summary of Opportunities for Including Arts Education in Ohio’s State Education Agency.

Cuyahoga Arts and Culture

On the About Us page, we can learn the background about Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. They write: "In 2006, voters in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, approved a 10-year tax on cigarettes to support arts and culture organizations. Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, a political subdivision of the State of Ohio, is the organization that administers those public funds by making grants to qualified organizations based in Cuyahoga County. We are one of the largest local public funders of arts and culture in the nation, investing more than $15 million each year in organizations of all sizes and disciplines."
