Kathleen Cerveny, Director of Evaluation and Institutional Learning at The Cleveland Foundation, hosts an Arts & Culture blog with a broad range of articles about events and issues in our community and elsewhere in the world. Ms. Cerveny’s archive contains a monthly collection of viewpoints dating from September 2007 to the present. 2009 articles of note include “Angry at the arts: It’s the American way” and “Stormy weather and cold climates: How the arts weather it here.”
Kathleen’s September 20, 2010 post talks about the dilemma of the arts with a link to a 13-minute You Tube video of Ben Cameron, now Program Director for the Arts at the Doris Duke Foundation. Watch it all. He talks about the impact of technology and the internet, saying “ultimately, we live in a world not defined by consumption but by participation,” and ends by talking about the future role of the arts and arts institutions all aspects of community life.

Arts Journal, the daily digest of arts, culture & ideas with articles in all fields from dance and theatre to music and visual art as well as listings, includes an insightful interview with conductor Gustavo Dudamel, “Gustavo Dudamel Talks About Building An Orchestra In LA,” in the Music section and several articles about Chicago’s Mayor Daley in the Issues section, notably one titled “Richard M. Read about Michael Posner in the Dana Press blog article “Posner receives presidential regard.” Cognitive neuroscientist Michael Posner is one of nine researchers to be awarded this year’s National Medal of Science, the highest honor given by the U.S government to scientists, educators and inventors. He took part in the Dana Foundation’s March 2008 “Arts & Cognition Consortium” which reported evidence of close links between training in the arts and improvement in certain cognitive areas, such as memory, self control and attention. He is a strong advocate for spreading the word about what we are have discovered about the brain and learning to the public and to policy-makers, including writing in Cerebrumstory, “How Arts Training Improves Attention and Cognition.”
