Feb.5, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University and Westlake Chinese School held Chinese New Year Celebration jointly. Participants shared happiness to celebrate the Spring Festival. The gala that highlighted a variety of programs made the participants totally enjoy it. An exquisitely produced performance was received with warm applause.
Feb.9, Campus International School (Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University main teaching school) held Chinese New Year Celebration. The large-scale entertainment evening party for Spring Festival full of songs and dances was closed with the loud applause of the audience.
Mar.22, Dr. Berkman, President of Cleveland State University and other professors visited Capital University of Economics and Business. Dr. Berkman, President of Cleveland State University and Director of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University had communication with Dr. Lin Xu, director of Hanban, and Dr. Jiaqiong Wang, President of Capital University of Economics and Business. They signed the memorandum of understanding on the Council of Confucius Institute between Capital University of Economics and Business and Cleveland State University.
Mar. 24, Six students from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University participated Eastern United States “Chinese Bridge” Preliminary Competition in Confucius Institute at Pittsburgh. The competition aimed at showing the Chinese language level of competitors through the speech on Chinese theme and the talent show contest on Chinese culture. The topics of speech were about Chinese culture, history, education, economic development and the study experience in China. After the intense competition, two of them from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University won second prize in the primary group and got the qualification to go to New York for final.
Mar. 29, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University and Confucius Institute at University of Akron held regional Confucius Institute meeting jointly.
Apr. 7, Two students from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University participated Eastern United States “Chinese Bridge” Final Competition in Confucius Institute at Pace University. The competition in the morning was the speech contest of preliminary group and the competition in the afternoon was the talent show on Chinese culture of preliminary group and the speech contest, the talent show on Chinese culture, and impromptus of senior group. Contestants in different contest links showed their Chinese language skills and diversified talent skills on Chinese culture. In the end, two students from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University won third prize.
Apr.12-14, Director and teachers from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University attended National Chinese Language Conference in Washington. Thousands of elementary and middle school principals in the U.S.A and directors of Confucius Institute got together to discuss and explore the present situation of Chinese language education in America and the future development. The theme of this three-day conference was about the present situation of Chinese language education, the language ability, continuous development, and the way to overstep the current situation. Also, the conference focused on the current status of Chinese language teaching, Chinese language education with global perspectives and the communication between Chinese culture and American culture and grouped participants to discuss more than sixty topics, such as the Chinese language teaching materials, teachers, and teaching methods.
May.16, Mr. Guangsheng Wang, painter and musician, held two compulsory lectures in Campus International School: Chinese painting and appreciation of Er Hu. , Mr. Guangsheng Wang has been the teacher at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music for over 25 years and painting has always been his second passion. In the lecture, , Mr. Guangsheng Wang not only showed his passion of the love towards the art of Chinese painting, but also influenced the participants to recognize the extensive and profound Chinese art.
May.17, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University issued honor certificate to Mr. Le Nguyen, the municipal government retired official at Cleveland. To acknowledge his years of service, Cleveland planned an evening party for him with musical performances and delicious food. At that night, Mr. Le Nguyen won several honors and he deserved the honors received.
May.21, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University participated Asian Art Festival held in Cleveland Chinatown. This Asian Art Festival displayed the Asian food and commodities and Asian culture and tradition were revealed thoroughly. The Art Festival demonstrated the ethnical traditional art of Asian countries and let the audience have a good understanding of the new trend of Art in different Asian countries.
Jun.10-20, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University organized Cleveland State University graduate students majored in international comparison of education visited China. From this visit, visiting group had an intense feeling of the cultural differences between Chinese education and American education, but also they had their own experience of broad and profound Chinese culture, and they had a further understanding of China.
Jun.11, Mr. Quansheng Chang, Education Consul of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in New York, carried on the investigation and study in Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University. In this investigation, Mr. Quansheng Chang noticed that Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University developed with better prospects and had a profound effect on the process of publicity of Chinese culture to people in Cleveland. Mr. Quansheng Chang gave a highly praise on Confucius Institute.
Jul.15-29, Eighteen high school students from Cleveland participated “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp and two of them won “Outstanding Camper” title. All the participants thought that the trip to China is meaningful and they gained a lot, learned the pure Chinese and had a deep understanding of Chinese culture. Lots of students hoped to lengthen the exchanging time, some students hoped to study in China after graduation, and some students wanted to travel other cities in China.
The new director and associate director of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University were installed. The new leader would bring the new prospect to Confucius Institute, lead Confucius Institute to a better development and promote dissemination of Chinese language and educational and cultural communication of Chinese culture and sinology.

Sep.21, Dr. Anthony Yen, the chairman of Board of Trustee of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University, invited Dr. Jason Lin, Vice Chairman at Cleveland Chinese Cultural Garden Association, and director, associate directors of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University to plant trees in Cleveland Chinese Cultural Garden to have an expectation on Confucius Institute to nurture more qualified personnel. At the same time, they hoped that the friendship between China and America could grow stronger like the just-planted trees.
Sep.24, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University and College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences held lecture on Confucian Thought at Cleveland First Unitarian Church. The lecture let Cleveland residents, especially the Chinese language learners know more about traditional Chinese philosophy. The lecture of special subject of Confucian Thought promoted the understanding of Chinese culture of American teachers and students.
Oct.2, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University held annual Teacher Appreciation Day Celebration to memorize Confucius’ birthday. In the celebration activities, the primary and middle school students in Cleveland offered a choreographed Chinese talent show to present their Chinese language ability. Around 600 participants recorded the highest among the all activities host by Confucius Institute.
Oct.5, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University and College of Business at Cleveland State University held conference on China's economic and political reform. The chairman of Board of Trustee of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University and the director of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University gave speech on the conference.
Oct.6, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University and Chinese-American Faculty & Staff Association (CAFSA) held Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration. Students from Confucius Institute gave the fascinating programs. After the show, all faculty and students together went outside to enjoy the Mid-Autumn moon. And this festival celebration enlarged the influence of Confucius Institute in Cleveland.
Oct.20, Confucius Institute personnel had the Midwest Confucius Institute annual meeting at Wayne State University at Michigan. Through the discussion, participants of this conference shared the experience of the teaching of Chinese language and pursued the resource sharing and cooperation. The enthusiasm of Chinese language study continued to heat up. Therefore, the host of this conference hoped this annual conference could provide a platform for the teaching of Chinese language to the participants.
Nov. 2, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University and Chinese Culture Association made Batik painting, Chinese traditional folk art, which was exhibited and permanently collected by Cleveland Museum of Art. Batik painting is an artwork of southwestern minority. The display of Batik painting showed Cleveland residents the diversified Chinese culture and the exquisite handicrafts.
Nov.16-18, Teachers from Confucius Institute attended the United States ACTFL conference on Teaching Foreign Languages at Philadelphia. This conference in the part of annual meeting discussed the planning including elevation, culture, courses, literature, teaching technologies, language teaching policy, professional development, research, special purpose of language teaching, teaching standards, and the use of technology.The relevant countries and language teaching institutes and publications were shown in the expo of languages in the world. The main topic of this conference was “Many Languages: One United Voice,” which emphasized on the important role played by language under the trend of globalization.
Dec.1, Teachers from Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University attended teacher training at University of Akron. The trainer better explained the present situation of the teaching of Chinese language in America, the difference on the teaching of Chinese language between China and America, the way to develop program of the teaching of Chinese language in America, the way to have a good teaching of Chinese language in America, etc. During the break of training, the participants communicate with each other about the teaching of Chinese language policy in American school, the study characteristic of students, the techniques managing classrooms, and so on.
Dec.2, Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University successfully held the first HSK-IBT test. The first successful HSK-IBT test represented a milestone of the development of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University. It was believed that with the passion of Chinese language learning, more and more students would hope to study and work in China. More and more students would take HSK-IBT test.
Dec.14-18, Director of Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University attended 7th Global Confucius Institute Conference at Beijing. The theme of the conference was “to advance the integration of Confucius Institute into universities and communities.” The three-day conference discussed “the system of Confucius Institute and universities in other countries,” “the development of Confucius Institute and universities in China,” “the system of Confucius Institute and national education,” and “Confucius Institute and community culture.”
5月17日，克利夫兰州立大学孔子学院为克利夫兰市政府退休官员Le Nguyen先生颁发荣誉证书。克利夫兰市为感谢Le Nguyen长期以来的工作，为Le Nguyen举办了晚宴，晚宴不仅有美味的食物，还有盛大的音乐表演。Le Nguyen先生当晚获得了许多荣誉，这些荣誉都是他应得的。
9月21日，理事会主席严云泰先生邀请克利夫兰市中华文化协会副主席 Jason Lin 博士以及克利夫兰州立大学孔子学院新领导班子到克利夫兰中华文化园植树，期待着孔子学院培养出更多的人才。同时也希望中美友谊像树木一样茁壮成长。
9月24日，克利夫兰州立大学孔子学院与本校文理学院合作，在克利夫兰市First Unitarian Church 举办孔子思想讲座。让克利夫兰人民，尤其是汉语学习者了解中国古代传统哲学思想。孔子思想专题讲座举办增进美国师生对中国文化的了解。
11月2日，克利夫兰州立大学孔子学院与中华文化协会合作制作蜡染中国特色艺术作品参加克利夫兰艺术馆 Atrium 艺术展，作品由艺术馆永久收藏。蜡染是中国西南少数民族工艺，此次蜡染作品的展出向克利夫兰人民展示了中国多元的文化和艺术作品的精美。
11月16日-18日，克利夫兰州立大学孔子学院老师赴费城参加 ACTFL 全美外语教学大会。本次会议在年会部份，规划包括评量、文化、课程、文学、教学方法科技、语言教学政策、专业发展、研究、特定目的语文教学、教学标准、科技应用等不同主题的研讨；在世界语言博览会部分，则有相关国家、各语言教学机构、出版品等展示活动。本次大会主题定为“多国语言:一个统一的声音”（Many Languages: One United Voice），意在强调全球化趋势下，语言所扮演的重要沟通角色。
