Test Proctoring For Students

Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor Logo

Cleveland State University uses three proctoring tools to promoting a fair testing environment for any exam offered through Blackboard. These products are:

  1. Respondus LockDown Browser - This tool creates an environment where a test is administered in a specialized browser that does not allow you to browse outside of the testing environment.
  2. Respondus Monitor - This tool, used in conjunction with LockDown Browser, will record you and your testing environment via webcam. The video can be viewed later by your instructor.
  3. Tegrity Remote Proctoring - This tool, used in conjunction with LockDown Browser, is an alternative to Respondus Monitor and records you and your testing environment via webcam. The video can be viewed later by the instructor.

Taking an Exam with Respondus LockDown Browser:

To begin, watch this short video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser and the webcam feature. A student Quick Start Guide (PDF) is also available.

Then, download and install LockDown Browser: https://www.csuohio.edu/center-for-elearning/lockdown-browser-and-monitor#Download

To ensure LockDown Browser and the webcam are set up properly, do the following:

  • Start LockDown Browser, log into Blackboard, https://bblearn.csuohio.edu/MACAuth/login.jsp and select this course.
  • Locate and select the Help Center button on the LockDown Browser toolbar.
  • Run the Webcam Check and, if necessary, resolve any issues.
  • Run the System & Network Check. If a problem is indicated, see if a solution is provided in the Knowledge Base. Troubleshooting information can also be emailed to our institution's help desk.
  • Exit the Help Center and locate the quiz in your course. Upon completing and submitting the quiz, exit LockDown Browser.
  • Faculty sometimes provide a practice quiz for students. If this is the case, this is a good opportunity for you to test drive LockDown Browser and Monitor prior to taking your quiz.

Taking an Exam with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor:

In addition to the steps mentioned in the LockDown Browser section above, when taking an online exam that requires LockDown Browser and a webcam, remember the additional guidelines:

  • Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted
  • Turn off all other devices (e.g. tablets, phones, second computers)
  • Clear your desk of all external materials not permitted — books, papers, other devices
  • Remain at your computer for the duration of the test
  • If the computer or networking environment is different than what was tested above, repeat the Webcam and System checks prior to starting the test
  • To produce a good webcam video, do the following:
    • Avoid wearing baseball caps or hats with brims
    • Ensure your computer or tablet is on a firm surface (a desk or table) — not on your lap, a bed, or other surface that might move
    • If using a built-in webcam, avoid tilting the screen after the webcam setup is complete
    • Take the exam in a well-lit room and avoid backlighting, such as sitting with your back to a window
  • Remember that LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted.

Taking an Exam with Respondus LockDown Browser and Tegrity Remote Proctoring:

In addition to the steps mentioned in the LockDown Browser section above, when taking an online exam that requires LockDown Browser and a webcam, remember the additional guidelines:

  • Hold an identification card with your photo on it, either just beside your face or under your chin when prompted to "Take Photo." Make sure your name and photo are readable on the ID card.
  • Be sure your desk and surrounding area are free of papers, books, study aids, and mobile devices, such as cell phones or tablets.
  • Press the "Start" button when you are ready to begin recording. Slowly tilt/pan your webcam to show the area around your computer.
    • Note: During the pan, show the surface of your desk all around your computer, surrounding walls, and floor. Scoot back from the desk and show that there is nothing on top of your lap that can be used to give answers.
  • Next, open Respondus LockDown Browser that you downloaded, if your instructor requires it for the exam (Respondus LockDown Browser download link).
  • Navigate to where your test is located within the course and click on it to begin.
  • Click the black square in the Tegrity recording toolbar to stop the recording, once you have submitted your exam.
    • Note: Leave your computer on and connected to the internet until your recording has uploaded completely. During this exam, you shouldn't access other resources (a phone, tablet, notes, books, etc.) or communicate with other people. Please stay in your seat and focus on the computer screen until the exam is complete. If an interruption occurs, briefly explain what happened by speaking directly to your webcam. Remember that once you start the recording, you will not be able to pause it.
