Sport and Recreational Tourism

Sport and recreational tourism is an introductory course designed to train sport managers, recreation specialists, exercise enthusiasts, and others to plan, organize, and lead leisure and adventure tours/trips. The course will highlight all significant facets of the travel/tourism business including land/sea/air travel, accommodations, educational/adventure opportunities, exchanges, insurance, and food service. Beyond discussing travel to typical destinations, the course will emphasize travel to exotic places that appeal to a more energetic clientele. Students will become familiar with the booking process including those essential aspects of leading tours to both domestic and foreign destinations. Students will actually plan a trip covering all aspects from A to Z.

PED 493/593 Section 471 (2 credits)
Psychology of Coaching

This course is designed to assist individuals who are early in their coaching careers to understand the “ins and outs” of coaching. Emphasis will be placed on techniques for selecting players, molding players into a team, practicing for excellence, teaching skills necessary for success, developing fitness goals that reflect the energy demands of a particular sport, and dealing with athletes whose goals are not always compatible with team goals. Additionally, the course will address individual coaching behaviors that have been found to be more successful.

Mentoring Tomorrow’s Teachers #3:
Culturally Relevant Teaching

Using Pathwise criteria, build your observational skills, learn to use observation forms effectively, and discover how to guide interns through “educative mentoring.” Explore the importance of employing culturally relevant pedagogy to address issues of diversity. Learn to use child study as well as a variety of assessment strategies for differentiating instruction. Blended (face-to-face/online)

Worksite Health Promotion

Areas of emphasis will include the development of program rationale and mission statements, use of needs assessment data to implement priority programs, determination of resources and roles for cost sharing, development of marketing packages to promote programs, a review of “best practices” in worksite health, a critique of internet resources and selected health risk appraisals, discussion of liability issues, and the design of an evaluation.

Dance and Movement for the Maturing Body

This course will focus upon dance and related movement forms for the maturing body focusing upon improving movement potential, body-awareness, creativity, and health. Theories and skills of dance technique will be explored including elements of rhythm, phrasing, movement combinations, and qualitative expression. Special attention to adaptations needed for the aging body will be explored in additional movement forms such as yoga, pilates, and dance exercise.

Picture This: Digital Storytelling for Teachers

This course emphasizes the application of digital storytelling techniques in language arts, history, and other fields. Students will learn how to take an idea from pre-production planning through video production as well as post-production editing and effects. Practice activities will prepare students to tell a story, operate a camera, use lighting techniques, work with a production team, and develop basic video, audio, and special effects editing skills. Class activities will be “hands on.” Ideas for replication in the K-12 classroom will be provided. Online activities will encourage collaboration and revision in the storytelling process. As a culminating activity, each student will produce an original video to be shared in a course film festival. Blended (face-to-face/online)

Unlocking Potential:
How to Address the Underachievement Epidemic

Underachievement Epidemic Do you wonder why some children don’t do homework or why their grades are far lower than their capabilities? Underachievement is a significant problem in our schools, particularly among gifted, advanced, and high potential learners. But when ANY of our students are not achieving to their ability, the loss to our schools, to society, and to individuals is staggering. Join noted child psychologist and internationally recognized expert Dr. Sylvia Rimm for this 2-day workshop for teachers, administrators, parents, counselors, and psychologists. Participants will gain experience with and understanding of how to meet the needs of underachieving children and teens.

What’s to Fear about Death and Dying

This five day workshop will explore themes related to death and dying in music, film and literature, critique resources for the classroom, examine rituals related to death/dying, and assess the impact of grief on the health of survivors. Course will use lecture, small group discussions, guest speakers, and field trips to facilitate the learning process.

Dynamic Differentiation for Gifted and Advanced Learners

This class offers a practical introduction to differentiation philosophy and best practices. It actively involves participants in examining ways to effectively use a wide variety of differentiated instructional strategies, assessments, and communications that meet the varied needs of gifted and advanced learners in both gifted and regular classroom situations. We will also explore approaches to questioning and thinking levels that support a differentiated curriculum. The structure of the workshop will model concepts and strategies expected of the participants.
