Office of Field Services (OFS)
COEHS/OFS Partnerships
In recognizing the unique needs of our interns and in attempting to serve the needs of Northeast Ohio schools, the Office of Field Services has adopted a partnership model dedicated to the continuous development of collaborative university/school/community relationships. This change recognizes that to serve CSU interns well, we must also serve the needs of our partner sites, who deal with the ever increasing challenge of educating our children. The College of Education and Human Services is a charter member of the National Association of Professional Development Schools (NAPDS), an organization dedicated to integrating this partnership model throughout all of P-16 education.
If you are interested in learning more about a partnership with Cleveland State University and the College of Education and Human Services, please contact Sandranette Sellers at 216-687-4616 or via email at s.sellers@csuohio.edu.
Some districts (like Cleveland) have partner schools that work closely with Cleveland State University. Partner schools have the following characteristics:
- A history of successful experiences with CSU interns, as demonstrated by a high percentage of mentor teachers working with CSU interns over time
- A high percentage of highly qualified mentor teachers, defined as teachers who have received additional mentor training or certified as Classroom Teacher Educators (CTEs)
- Supportive administrators
- An identified school site coordinator who helps us identify outstanding mentor teachers and assists in troubleshooting field-related concerns
- A commitment to host a significant number of interns each semester
Horizon Science Academy was just named as one of six Northeast Ohio school receiving an award as a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
Cleveland School of the Art (Lower Campus) received a 2009 Panasonic National School Change award.

OFS currently maintains relationships with the school districts listed below. These districts have:
- An agreement to host CSU interns
- Designated district or site coordinators
- Procedures to assist OFS in matching students
- Proximity to CSU (within 35 miles)
These districts cover a wide territory and offer internship opportunities in both urban and suburban settings. Students may request a match at any of these districts for practicum or student teaching internships without petitioning. OFS will not send match requests to districts that are not included on this list.
| East | West | |
|---|---|---|
| Urban | Cleveland Euclid Warrensville Heights Maple Heights Garfield Heights Charter or Private Cleveland Heights/University Heights East Cleveland |
Cleveland Charter or Private Elyria* |
| Suburban | South Euclid-Lyndhurst Beachwood Shaker Heights Mayfield Mentor* |
Westlake Strongsville Lakewood North Olmsted Brecksville Parma North Royalton and Berea |
*on a very limited basis in programs where supervisors are available and where the student has extenuating circumstances
Some districts are able to accommodate more interns than others. If more students request a district or school than the school can accommodate, OFS will determine which match requests are sent by reviewing student transcripts and files and consulting with program area faculty. If OFS is unable to send a request to a student’s first or second district choice, OFS will send a request to a partner district and/or school that matches the student’s request as closely as possible.
