Upward Bound Program

The Upward Bound Program at Cleveland State University aids qualified high school students in generating the skills and motivation necessary to complete high school and to successfully enroll and succeed in postsecondary education.

What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound Program is a year-round pre-college program for high school students who attend one of the five assigned target high schools in the Cleveland Municipal School District. Upward Bound is a comprehensive program divided into two phases: the academic year and the summer residential program.

The program provides participants with a variety of academic enrichment and academic support services. Selected students must demonstrate the potential for education beyond high school. Through participation in Cleveland State University's Upward Bound Program, students will learn the necessary academic skills needed to enroll in a college or university.

What are the Benefits of Upward Bound?

  • Encourages students to explore a wide variety of career and educational possibilities.
  • Exposes students to new experiences through participation in cultural, recreational, social and academic activities.
  • Raises student awareness of the value of education and helps them discover that learning can be fun as well as satisfying.
  • Helps each student develop leadership skills and provides opportunities to use them.

Who is Eligible?

  • Students who have demonstrated the desire to attend a post-secondary institution
  • Students that maintain at a 2.0 GPA
  • Students who are First Generation (neither parent has earned a Bachelor's degree)
  • Students who meet the U.S. Department of Education income guidelines.
  • Students enrolled in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade who attend one of the six target high schools: Collinwood, East High, East Technical, Glenville, Lincoln West and Martin Luther King
