In partnership with Cleveland State Community Learning Center for Children and Youth, The CSU Literacy Education Faculty invites you to join us for the 2013 Annual Reading Conference.
The Conference Theme for this year is Growing Literacy from the Core: Standards and Strategies. The Conference keynote addresses and breakout sessions will highlight the importance of putting the ELA Common Core Standards at the forefront of instructional strategies so that literacy educators can strive to embed these into daily reading/ instruction and assessment.
We have an exciting day planned that will also feature highlights from our on campus K-12 schools including Campus International and our new MC2 STEM High School!
Featured Conference Keynote Speakers
Diane Waff, EdD- University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Waff, a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania, specializes in working with teachers in all subject areas to establish professional learning communities and habits of reflective practice, leading to innovations in curriculum and instruction that increase students access to higher levels of literacy learning. Dr. Waff has extensive experience as a high school teacher, district and building administrator, K-12 teaching and learning coordinator, and teacher researcher and currently serves as the Director of the Philadelphia Writing, a site of the National Writing Project, since 2010 .Her current research interests focus on how literacy-focused professional development opportunities for content-area teachers relate to changes in teacher practice and student outcomes.
On Teacher Inquiry: Approaches to Language and Literacy Research
Christopher Lehman, EdM.
Christopher Lehman (@iChrisLehman, ChristopherLehman.com) is an international speaker, education consultant and author/co-author of several popular books including Pathways to the Common Core with Lucy Calkins and Mary Ehrenworth; Energize Research Reading and Writing; A Quick Guide to Reviving Disengaged Writers and Falling In Love With Close Reading: Lessons for Analyzing Texts-And Life with Kate Roberts. His background includes teaching middle school, high school, serving as a literacy coach, and supporting grades 3-8 as a Senior Staff Developer at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University. His articles have appeared in many publications and popular blogs including Voices in the Middle, SmartBrief, and EdWeek. Chris consults in elementary and secondary schools, supporting educators, coaches, and administrators in developing rigorous and passionate literacy instruction across content areas. His unwavering belief that every child can succeed drives his practical, research-driven and engaging work in schools throughout the world.
A graduate of UW-Madison, he went on to receive his M.A. in Teaching at NYU and his Ed.M. in Education Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University .His scholarly interests include child and adolescent literacy, school leadership, and the implications of standards and testing on instruction..
