Becky J. Smith, PhD, CAE, MCHES
Meet our new faculty member Becky Smith
Dr. Smith comes to the HHP Department at Cleveland State as a visiting professor to work primarily with the Community Health master degree program. She has most recently worked as a private consultant in the areas of education and public health, as well as association development and governance. She has extensive experience in association management as well as education and public health both nationally and internationally. She served as the Executive Director of the American Association for Health Education and Executive Editor of the American Journal of Health Education for more than 20 years.
Dr. Smith earned her bachelor and master degrees at the State University of New York at Brockport and her PhD at the University of Illinois with a major in Health and Safety Studies and minors in Labor and Industrial Relations and History and Philosophy of Education. She is a Certified Association Executive (CAE), and Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES).
From 1991 through 2001, Dr. Smith served on the Board of Trustees of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE), and as the Regional Director of the North American Regional Office (NARO) of IUHPE. She was a founding Board member of the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. From 1992-94, Dr. Smith served as the Chairperson of the National School Health Education Coalition. She was a founding Board member of the Foundation for the Advancement of Health Education and currently serves as Vice President. Dr. Smith has served as a chairperson of the National Coordinating Committee on School Health and Safety and as chairperson of the Alliance for Curriculum Reform. She served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Health Education Centers from 2002-2009 and is a current Board member of the National Commission for Accreditation of Health Education Centers.
Dr. Smith has directed 25 national projects in health education and health promotion funded by government, corporation, and foundation sources. She served as the Editor of the Journal of Health Education from 1986 through 1997 and as the Executive Editor of both the American Journal of Health Education and the International Electronic Journal of Health Education, 1998-2010. She has served on numerous national advisory committees, been an author of 30 professional publications and made more than 70 national and international level presentations.
On the personal side, Becky enjoys travel, photography, and her book club! She is especially pleased to be joining the HHP Department and looking forward to working with the many outstanding faculty and students during the next year.
