Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The TESOL program currently has a U.S. Department of Education federal grant that pays the tuition of pre-service and in-service teachers who are interested to get a TESOL or Bilintual Endorsement. See below for information and application forms.

Program Overview

The Programs in Tesol at CSU offer professional training to students planning to teach English as a foreign or second language in a variety of settings.

Depending on their future plans, students may choose to:

  • Pursue an M.Ed. in TESOL in order to teach overseas, at community education centers, or privately-sponsoredlanguage programs;
  • Pursue an endorsement in TESOL on an existing Ohio teaching license or certificate;
  • Complete courses to receive a TESOL certificate that will increase employment opportunities in the USA and abroad.

Students in the TESOL program will:

  • Learn about the nature of language and the psychological processes involved in first and second language acquisition;
  • Develop awareness of the processes of language variation and change in different social environments;
  • Increase their knowledge and sensitivity to cultural diversity;
  • Develop skills to implement current teaching methods in L2 education;
  • Improve their ability to prepare L2 materials using available technology;
  • Apply past and current theories of second language acquisition in the Second Language (L2) classroom.
