Middle Childhood Science Education

Middle Childhood Science (Undergraduate Program)

Students majoring in middle childhood education choose two areas of concentration. A curriculum has been designed specifically to meet the needs of those students who choose science as one of their concentration areas. Students are required to complete 20 hours of science content intended for middle school teachers. The required courses are:

  • Earth and Space Science for Middle School Teachers,
  • Principles of Chemistry for Middle School Teachers,
  • Conceptual Physics for Middle School Teachers, and
  • Biology Content for Middle School Teachers

In addition to these science content courses students also complete Science in Middle School; the goals of this course are to provide experiences that will enable the future teacher to be successful in a middle school science classroom. Middle Childhood Science (Certificate and Graduate Program)

This program is designed for teachers who hold a certificate or license in elementary (K-8 or 1-8) and who have completed five or more years of teaching science in one or more middle school grades. The completion of the program results in a certificate or masters degree in middle childhood science education with the possibility of adding a middle school science license. Students are required to complete 20 hours of science content.

The required courses are:

  • Earth and Space Science for Middle School Teachers,
  • Principles of Chemistry for Middle School Teachers,
  • Conceptual Physics for Middle School Teachers, and
  • Biology Content for Middle School Teachers

In addition to these science content courses students also complete Instructional Development in Science Education; a course designed to introduce teachers to the research about and strategies for implementing reformed teaching strategies in the urban middle school science classroom.

Students intending to pursue a master’s degree are also required to complete the college core courses and carry out an action research project in their classroom.
