Middle Childhood Mathematics Licensure Programs

Students majoring in middle childhood education choose two of the following areas of concentration: Mathematics, Science, Language Arts or Social Studies. In mathematics, the coursework has been specifically designed for middle-childhood majors by faculty in the mathematics department in conjunction with faculty from Teacher Education. We offer undergraduate and post-baccalaureate initial license programs.

Undergraduate Program

Students without an undergraduate degree can earn their degree and licensure together. If mathematics is chosen as one of the specializations, students are required to complete 20 hours of mathematics content designed specifically for middle school teachers. Education coursework is taken with education majors from a variety of specializations. The undergraduate degree program contains from 128 to 185 semester hours of study, depending on content area chosen. For further information, please visit link to undergraduate catalog at http://www.csuohio.edu/undergradcatalog/edu/bsedu/mided.htm

Post-Baccalaureate Program

For individuals who have earned bachelor's degrees and who have had little or no professional training in education, the post-baccalaureate program is one pathway to obtaining a teaching license. While these programs lead to licensure, most of the course work they require cannot be applied to a graduate degree. All post-baccalaureate students seeking teacher licensure must fully meet the college's admission requirements and professional standards as outlined on the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) website http://www.csuohio.edu/cehs/students/advising/postbaccalaureate/.

Additional information specific to the Middle-childhood program can be found at http://www.csuohio.edu/undergradcatalog/edu/licensure/midlic.htm

Moreover, students must be available for fieldwork in area schools during the day and are urged to carefully plan their program of study since they must apply for practicum and student teaching placements two semesters in advance of registration for these experiences. An individual appointment with an adviser in the COEHS Advising Office is required prior to acceptance into any post-baccalaureate program. During the appointment, the adviser will provide a personalized assessment of required course work. Upon program completion, students are also invited to make use of the university's Career Services Center for help in obtaining employment.

Some post-baccalaureate applicants are eligible for student loans, but others are not. Post-baccalaureate students interested in finding out if they are eligible for financial aid should contact Campus 411 to receive the most up-to-date information.

A complete post-baccalaureate application file includes:

  1. A completed Cleveland State application (online or paper).
  2. An official copy of the applicant’s grade transcript sent directly from the regionally accredited college or university that granted the bachelor’s degree showing the date of receipt of the degree. * Applicants who are unable to obtain an official transcript from a previous college/university because of financial or other obligations may not be considered for post-baccalaureate admission to Cleveland State.
  3. A one-time, $30 undergraduate application processing fee.

Graduate Programs

Graduate Certificate in Middle Childhood Mathematics Education
The Graduate certificate program is designed for those who have a teaching certificate (K-8 or 1-8) or middle childhood license in a subject other than mathematics, and five years or more teaching. This program includes core courses for licensure in middle childhood mathematics, however most candidates will have to meet additional requirements for licensure. Potential students should apply for graduate admission as a “certificate” student to register for classes. Applicants must be eligible for the graduate certificate admission requirements in the Admission section of the Catalog. Credits earned for the certificate may be applied toward a graduate degree, as approved by the student’s graduate program director and the policies of the College of Graduate Studies.

Students are required to complete 20 hours of mathematics content and one pedagogy/mathematics education research course. For further information, please visit http://graduatestudies.csuohio.edu/catalog/?View=entry&EntryID=408

Curriculum and Instruction Masters Degree specializing in Middle Childhood Mathematics Education (not initial license)

The Middle Childhood Education Master’s Program is intended to strengthen candidates’ content and pedagogical knowledge in mathematics. In addition, the nature and the needs of early adolescents are addressed, as they particularly relate to the design, delivery, and evaluation of culturally and developmentally responsive instruction. Throughout the program, the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills is aided by reflective practice and inquiry. The program provides for concentrated study in Mathematics, and contains all of the courses in the Graduate Certificate described above. Students are also required to complete the college core courses and carry out an action research project in their classroom.
