Teacher Education (TE)
Middle Childhood Education
Taken as a whole, the curriculum focuses on the nature and needs of early adolescents as they particularly relate to the design, delivery, and evaluation of culturally and developmentally responsive instruction. Throughout the program, the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills is aided by reflective practice and inquiry. To that end, the observation of middle- and junior-high school students and settings accompanies relevant study, is followed by on-site practice, and culminates in supervised student teaching.
The Middle Childhood Education licensure program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Middle Childhood Education with two concentrations selected from Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts.
College graduates who have had little or no professional training in education can pursue a Middle Childhood license at the post-baccalaureate level. Please note that students must be available for fieldwork in area schools during the day.
Middle Childhood licensed teachers can add one or more concentration areas by completing the required coursework for those concentrations. All concentrations are available at the post-baccalaureate level.
Middle Childhood licensed teachers seeking to add Mathematics or Science concentrations also have the option of enrolling in the master’s degree outlined below.
Teachers holding Ohio teaching licenses in other areas are also permitted to add a Middle Childhood license for a single concentration area by completing both required concentration coursework and all Middle Childhood professional coursework that has not already been completed. This work would be done as a post-baccalaureate student.
This specialization provides advanced study in the field of middle childhood education with particular emphasis being given to the design and delivery of effective mathematics or science instruction in grades four through nine. The master’s program does not provide for initial teacher licensure or any type of endorsement. However, Middle Childhood licensed teachers seeking to add a Mathematics or Science concentration to their MCE license can do so while earning this master’s degree.
