CHAMPS (Careers in Health and Medical Professions)

Dr. Robert Ferguson
Cleveland State University (CSU) is pleased announce that for the fourth consecutive summer, we will be offering 30 local high-school students the opportunity to participate in the CHAMPS (Careers in Health and Medical Professions). This exciting year round program starts with two-week experience on the CSU campus during last two weeks of June. It is open to the students of Cleveland and suburb school districts, who have completed the 9th grade and is being offered at no cost through the generous support of the Kaiser Permanente Foundation and Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.
The Summer Institute is an academically enriching and personally rewarding summer experience that will introduce students to a wide variety of high-wage careers in health and medicine. Hands-on research experiences will transform students into medical detectives, challenging them to explore health and disease using CSU’s research laboratories, equipment, and resources. Students will engage in shadowing experiences and other learning opportunities with CSU students & faculty, medical doctors, and other healthcare professionals in the area. Adult supervision will be provided at all times.
The Health Career program does not stop after summer. The Summer Institute is part of larger program to build awareness of health careers, knowledge in the sciences, readiness for college, and personal skills for the 21st century. We aim to offer four (4) follow up activities for all participants during the school year as well as offer ongoing summer institutes for three consecutive years for all the students. The committee will take the decision for the future program, at proper time considering availability of the resources.
Build awareness of medical and health careers,
Increase knowledge in the sciences and math,
Enhance readiness for college, and
Sharpen personal skills for the 21st century
