What is in a Name?

The Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (HPERD) department recently changed its name to Health and Human Performance (HHP). We sat down with Dr. Sheila Patterson, department chair, to find out what prompted the new title and what is ahead for HHP.

Why the name change?

The department changed its name to Health and Human Performance to better reflect current academic programs. HPERD is a dated term, evolving from the disciplines of Health Education and Physical Education. The dance program (and our beloved faculty for dance, including Professor Lynn Deering) recently moved to the Department of Theater Art, a move also more in aligned with national trends.

What is next for HHP?

Our department has recently expanded our exercise science program by welcoming Dr. Emily Kullman as a faculty member. During the 2013-2014 academic year we will be searching for a post-doctoral researcher to work in the Human Performance lab on select research projects and grant initiatives. We also have requested positions in other programs to replace retiring faculty. In addition to the faculty, we are looking to grow our online course and program offerings in the community health and coaching area.
