ESL Graduate Course Descriptions


ESL 502 ESL Graduate Writing
(2 semester credit hours). This course focuses on the writing skills needed in graduate school. Instruction will address students’ needs: grammar at the sentence level and organization and style at the paragraph and essay level. Practice in grammar and different types of writing assignments will be done in-class and out of class. Assignments will be such that students may use writing assignments from other academic courses or a topic provided. Some time will be given to each of the following: citing of sources, paraphrasing/summarizing, short-answer essay questions, lab reports, and longer research papers. The course is open to all non-native English speaking graduate students. The course is graded S/U. The course meets for two hours, once a week.

ESL 503 Intermediate Listening & Speaking for Graduate Students
(2 semester credit hours). This course focuses on spoken English for international graduate students who are non-native speakers of English. Students practice speaking and listening to American English. Course topics include: Recognition and production of sounds, intonation patterns at intermediate level and some speaking (speech) skills. Some time will also be given to the development of competence and confidence in listening and speaking skills in both-academic and general conversation within supportive structured and non-structured situations. The course is open to all non-native English speaking graduate students. Placement by TOEFL speaking score or SPEAK test score is required. The course is graded S/U. The course meets for two hours, once a week. Students may not accept a teaching assistantship until after they have passed ESL 503.

ESL 504 Communication Skills for International Teaching Assistants
(2 credit hours) The course is designed to help International teaching assistants (TA's) or future TA’s improve their communication skills in order to communicate their knowledge effectively to students. It will focus on pronunciation, intonation and stress, as well as presentation/teaching skills. Teaching strategies and cross-cultural communication are major topics of discussion and assignments. Students will give mini-lessons to practice the skills covered. Open to all international graduate students. Placement by TOEFL or SPEAK score or passing ESL 503 is required. The course is graded S/U. The course meets for two hours, once a week. International teaching assistants may teach concurrently while taking ESL 504.
