Cleveland State University is pleased to accept students from many language backgrounds and wants to help all students succeed in their academic program. Therefore, all nonnative English-speaking students must prove or gain satisfactory communicative competence in English early in their studies. Communicative competence means proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing of formal English for the purpose of university studies. The English as a Second Languages (ESL) Program is designed for both undergraduate and graduate students for whom English is not their first language, regardless of citizenship. ESL 502 Graduate ESL Writing provides students with instruction and help on writing assignments.
International Teaching Assistants and SPEAK Test Information
Any international graduate student who wishes to hold a teaching assistantship
must demonstrate proficiency in spoken English. An international graduate
student must provide either an official TSE score
or schedule to take
the
SPEAK
test. Two graduate-level ESL courses are offered,
ESL
503 and
ESL 504.
These courses are open to any graduate student for whom English is a
second language. Please contact the ESL Program
Director before registering for
either class. Further information for International Teaching
Assistants (ITAs), can be found
