Competence to Practice, Confidentiality, and Consent: Ethics Essentials for Mental Health Professionals

In the era of evidence-based practice, working within one's scope of practice and dealing with decisions about competence are essential ethical issues for mental health professionals. This workshop will also focus on recommendations for informed consent practices and documentation, including discussion of the limits of confidentiality. Changes in the rules for practice of the Ohio Board of Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapists will be reviewed.

Workshop Objectives:

  • To teach participants the criteria for competent work with clients in an environment that demands evidence-based practice
  • To offer participants strategies for assessing their own levels of competence and developing new areas of competence
  • To provide participants with guidelines for ethical referrals and terminations of service when treatment is not appropriate or helpful
  • To explain current criteria for informed consent according to current ethical standards and Ohio regulations, with special attention to the disclosure of the limits of confidentiality and issues with minors and others not capable of giving consent
  • To describe recent changes in ethical standards of the Ohio Board of Counseling, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapy
