Depressive Disorders

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems of our day.  Some researchers refer to depression as “the common cold of psychiatric disorders.”  Yet, in a high percentage of persons, it is a very treatable disorder with psychotherapy and/or antidepressant medications.  This seminar will provide health care professionals, consumers, and family members with up-to-date information on the continuum of mood disorders from adjustment reaction with depressed mood and dysthymia to major depression. Key topics covered include theories of causation, diagnostic criteria, treatment modalities, family responses, and self-help strategies.

  • Recognize diagnostic criteria and treatment modalities used for various mood disorders.
  • Describe the ways in which families respond to depressive disorders in one of their members.
  • List several self-help strategies for dealing with depression.
