Facing Ethical Dilemmas: Practical Solutions to Difficult Situations

The various ethical codes for health care disciplines have been established to insure protection for clients seeking help from these professionals. They must also be useful and clear enough so that mental health professionals may have guidelines that will assist them in the delivery of effective service. However, there are a number of circumstances that put the professional in a dilemma--what seems right regarding the needs of the client is in some way in conflict with particular ethical principles. This course will focus on those practice dilemmas that professionals may face and examine ways of dealing with them on a practical basis. Discussion of personal experiences in a confidential way will help you address challenges that you and fellow participants have faced.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify the primary areas of APA, ACA, NASW and other ethical codes that may result in such dilemmas
  • Discuss examples of these experiences, especially those experienced by fellow participants
  • Describe approaches for dealing with these dilemmas in a practical way allows the professional to deliver the desired quality of service
  • Outline ways in which you will address any personal dilemmas
