You’ll learn about the terms and concepts of network security. Learn about why you need a Security Policy and what should be involved in establishing one. This course also covers components of Network Security such as firewalls, access filtering, and AAA. You’ll learn about Intrusion Detection Systems, Intrusion Prevention Systems, and how and why to do basic penetration testing on your own network or contract someone else to do it. Key topics covered: the need for network security; common threats; the security policy; firewalls and access filtering; VPNs, AAA, IDS and IPS; penetration testing; network security and disaster recovery.
Prerequisites: Networking Basics course, or equivalent working knowledge of networking basics and the ISO seven-layer model in detail.
At the conclusion of the course you will be able to:
1) Explain the need for network security.
2) Describe the most common threats.
3) Discuss network access – needed vs. unwanted.
4) Compare authentication vs. encryption.
5) Illustrate firewalls and access filtering.
6) Discuss VPN’s & AAA.
7) Describe intrusion detection systems.
8) Illustrate penetration testing.
9) Discuss network security and disaster recovery.
