Access Relationships and Table Design

Tables are the backbone of your database. This course focuses on creating tables to maximize data input, validation, and extraction. Topics include creating tables, setting field types and properties. In addition, defining relationships and enforcing referential integrity will be covered. Also, importing and linking from other databases and Excel will be taught.

By the end of the day, participants will be able to:

  • Create tables in both datasheet view and design view.
  • Understand the different data types that are available in Access 2007, such as text, number, date and time, currency, etc.
  • Modify field properties, such as field size, format, captions, and input masks.
  • Set a primary key field and understand why it is needed in Access.
  • Create relationships between tables and understand the difference between one to one and one to many relationships.
  • Understand what it means to enforce referential integrity and use cascade update related fields and cascade delete related records.
  • Import and link data from other Access databases or Excel files.
  • Set validation rules and validation text for fields.
  • Create lookup fields to look up data in another table or from a value list.
