Lisa has worked in the grant field since 1992, beginning her career at the Association of College and University Offices (ACUO) in Washington, DC after graduating from Baldwin Wallace College, OH with a degree in English. While at ACUO, she performed funding searches, critiqued proposals, organized national workshops, edited a newsletter, and provided counsel to member colleges and universities, whose goals were to increase faculty/institutional grant activity on campus. During her time at ACUO, she helped various small liberal arts institutions raise $2.5 million, with grant sizes averaging $5,000 to $50,000.
After leaving Washington, Lisa accepted a position in the Research Office at Cleveland State University. She was responsible for assisting faculty in their pursuit of grant funding. This included identifying appropriate grants and fellowships for faculty projects, reaching out to faculty to encourage them to become involved in the grants process, educating faculty and staff about the grant process, and critiquing/editing grant proposal narratives. Based on her work at CSU, Lisa received a $1,500 grant for research on roadblocks to faculty grant involvement. During her tenure at Cleveland State, grant awards increased from $16 million to $20 million.
Between 1998 and 2005, Lisa operated Camp and Associates, Inc., a grant consultation firm that offered services such as researching grant opportunities, writing proposals, and conducting grant workshops. The company’s clients ranged from nonprofit educational organizations to higher education institutions, school districts, and small businesses. She helped her clients secure over $40 million in grant awards.
In 2005, Lisa returned full time to Cleveland State University as a grant writer, tasked with helping departments across the University develop State and Federal grant proposals. She helped the institution secure an average of $6-7 million per year in externally funded projects from organizations such as the U.S. Department of Education, National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Health Resources and Services Administration, the State of Ohio, and numerous other entities. This amount represents approximately 20% of the University’s annual awards. She was promoted to the University’s Grants Development Officer in 2006, and to the Special Assistant to the President, External Funding, in 2007. In 2009, Lisa was named Assistant Dean for Strategic Initiatives for Case Western Reserve University's Case School of Engineering. She continues to teach continuing education programs for Cleveland State University.
Throughout her entire career, she has secured over $75 million, including a $24 million grant for a reading program and a $23.8 million award for an engineering center, as well as a wide variety of smaller grants in the $10-20,000 range. Her overall hit rate is currently at 54%.
When not writing grants or other documents for Cleveland State University, Lisa spends time with her husband Jim and their two children, Jimmy and Douglas, where they enjoy the many amenities offered to families throughout Northeast Ohio.
