Counseling and Mental Health Continuing Education Spring 2012 Workshops

Offered through the Department of Counseling, Administration, Supervision and Adult Learning and the School of Nursing

Children Exposed to Domestic Violence: The Forgotten Victims

Children living with domestic violence are often the forgotten victims. They are affected in so many ways, especially as the blanket of safety and security placed on them by those who are to protect them has been yanked away. Placed in harm's way, these children face numerous risks: neglect, direct abuse, and the loss of one or both parents. Exposure to violence transforms a child's view of the world, emotional landscape and basic ability to trust.

You will learn:

  • Definitions of domestic violence and other abuses
  • Dynamics and effects of domestic violence upon children
  • Identification, assessment, treatment goals and mental health interventions
  • Protective factors and the resilience of children

Ethics Responsibilities When Clients Threaten Suicide or Harm to Others

Virtually all mental health professionals experience times when clients appear dangerous to themselves or to others. In fact, these situations have been identified as some of the most stressful that therapists encounter. This workshop will assist mental health professionals in identifying their ethical duties when such circumstances arise. It will also offer guidelines for responsible care, consultation and recommendations for documentation of the assessment of risk and treatments. A therapist's rights and responsibilities when clients threaten them will also be addressed.

Psychotropic Medication Use with School-Aged Children

Psychotropic medications are increasingly being prescribed for school-aged children. Professionals working with students need to become familiar with the types and effects of medications, as well as incidence and trends in diagnosis and prescribing patterns. This overview will highlight recent findings related to disorders like Bipolar I Disorder in children, medications used for outbursts, and proposed changes in diagnostic criteria in the DSM-V. The role of the counselor, psychologist, and educator will be emphasized.

Psychological Disorders within a Trauma Framework

Post traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder and dissociative identity disorder are among the continuum of disorders that are often trauma-based. Even though DSM IV classifies these disorders as anxiety, personality and dissociative disorders, most clients with these diagnoses have a history of trauma in common. In this workshop, we'll look at disorders within a trauma framework, examining how symptoms and characteristics can be viewed as adaptive responses to the client's previous life experiences. We'll look at how this treatment approach allows a shift in focus from judgmental to compassionate, and from deficit-based to strength-based strategies that help clients learn skills to overcome their maladaptive responses.

Working with Resistant Clients

A client's resistance to counseling can be overwhelming for even the most experienced clinician. This workshop is for professionals who would like to increase their skills and repertoire of strategies for more successfully engaging oppositional clients. Although resistance poses significant challenges, embracing it as a natural phenomenon in the work that we do can lead to positive outcomes.
