The “business as usual” mindset that framed business decisions and actions quite successfully since the Industrial Revolution is often not resilient enough to respond to new markets and opportunities. Successful businesses today are navigating a shift away from this way of decision making to learning and implementing strategies that help them transform their operations, their products, and even their corporate culture.
Strong organizations build strong collaborations across sectors, both within and outside of their four walls. Sometimes this means working with those that might normally be in an adversarial role. There are national and regional examples where inviting in potentially opposing voices strengthens the whole and this month we speak with those who have done this, benefitting their organizations, their collaborators, and the larger community, moving everyone forward.
The root of the word courage is heart. Not a usual or even comfortable topic in the business realm, but one very important to the longevity and healthy culture of a company. Successful business engages their employees at the personal and family level. This month we will present an example of where this is being done successfully and grounded facts on why it is good for your organization.
To be successful at sustainable business, an organization must understand and be able to measure its impact on the planet through its processes and products. Using concepts of feedback loops and industrial ecology as well as rigorous analytical tools such as Life Cycle Assessment often lead companies to value enhancement through sustainability, but not necessarily to the intuitive or even the “politically correct” answer. This month we will discuss and explore the scientific methods for getting our economic activity in synch with the natural systems in which we operate.
Hard science, accounting, and facts are critical for a deep and necessary understanding of the true costs and benefits of our actions. Acknowledging and accepting this is a necessary step toward real change and transformational improvement in the organization. Among other things, this month, we will discuss the UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment for Business and Industry, the Natural Step, and Natural Capitalism.
Examples of high efficiency, astute problem solving, optimizing resources, and innovation are all around us in nature. This month we look to nature as teacher with practical stories and examples of how business process can be, and has been, transformed through Biomimicry, emulating nature’s genius of ecosystem development.
The growth and healthy sustenance of our economy will be greatly enhanced when businesses share the examples of success and challenges they have had leading change within their organizations. This month we will discuss sharing the tools used to build commitment, culture, leadership, and empowerment which spread success beyond a single organization.
An expanded definition of what and who learns helps us to see organizations as contained learning entities. People learn, teams learn, organizations learn. This month we will discuss the importance of engaged learning within not only organizations, but the whole of society and how this accelerates sustainable business success.
This is our second annual CEO panel, discussing the nuances of successful leadership for both their companies and for the communities in which they operate and thrive.
This session will be an opportunity to look back through our previous sessions in interactive dialogue to verify, consolidate, and make clear the road ahead to business success through sustainable business leadership. By the completion of the 2011-2012 CRT season, participants will possess a strong initial road map to advance their organizations.
