FAQs: Newly Admitted Graduate Students

Congratulations! You've been admitted to the Monte Ahuja College of Business as a Graduate Student! Now what?

This page is designed to answer the most frequently asked questions that we receive from newly admitted students like yourself.


GENERAL Questions
Q: I need help choosing classes, getting more information and have other questions. Where do I go for help?

A: Making an appointment with your advisor will help and provide you with a contact that you can refer back to throughout your academic pursuits within the College of Business. To schedule an appointment, call the advising office at 216.687.3730.

Q: I have a small question, can I contact someone via email?

A: Sure! Our general email account is cbacsu@csuohio.edu. We check it every day and make the best effort to answer questions as soon as possible.

Q: Can I have an appointment for later today?

A: Unfortunately, we do not take same-day appointments. We do accept walk-in appointments on Wednesdays from 8:30am - 5:30pm.

Q: I work during the day, are you open in the evening?

A: Yes! we take appointments at 5:00 and 5:30 on Tuesday evenings, and walk-in appointments on Wednesday until 5:30.

Questions about COURSES
Q: So, how long is my program?

A: The check sheet that we emailed to you will give you a pretty clear road map to graduation. All credit hours for each course are listed on the check sheet as well.

Q: Why are certain classes waived for me and others are not?

A: The Graduate Admissions Committee waives courses based on past academic experience within ten years for most classes. For other courses, such as Finance and certain Accounting courses, CSU can only waive courses taken within the last five years from AACSB accredited institutions. Ask your advisor if you need further clarification for this, or email us at cbacsu@csuohio.edu .

Q: Can courses be waived for prior work experience?

A: Unfortunately not. Only past academic experience can be used to waive classes.

Q: What about these Level I classes? Is there any other way to waive these classes other than the GRE or GMAT?

A: Unfortunately no. For GAD 501 and 502, these classes can only be waived with appropriate test scores. If you do not waive OSM 500 with your scores, you are able to take the OSM Waiver Course as an alternative to taking the actual class. More information on that can be found here.

Q: Can anything be waived from Level III? What if I took a class that was similar to it during my undergrad?

A: No. These courses represent the core of your program and must be completed for graduation.

Q: Can I transfer courses from a graduate program I started at a different school?

A: It is possible to transfer courses, but there are several requirments to this. Please contact your advisor to schedule a time to talk about it, and be sure to have a copy of the courses you have taken and their grades. Courses can only be transferred between domestic institutions.

CAMPUSNET
Q: How do I use CampusNet?

A: At this link, please download a guide to CampusNet.

Q: Is there a shorter version?

A: Yes. At the top of CampusNet, there is a tab labeled "Student". Click the tab and you will see that you have an "Add/Drop" heading. Clicking "Add/Drop" and following the on-screen prompts is an easy, quick way to add courses to your schedule.

Q: What is “Grad Express Degree Audit” ?

A: We are happy you asked! Unfortunately, it’s not in use for graduate students quite yet. You can skip using that for now, and contact your advisor if you want to insure that you are on the right track to graduate.

Q: How do I log into CampusNet again?

A: Every student has a seven-digit CSU ID number that acts as your login ID. Your password must be set for your first time and if you ever lose it. On the front page of CampusNet, you’ll find a link for “How Do I Log In?” that has instructions on how to set or recover this.

ELECTIVES
Q: Can I use any undergraduate courses as electives?

A: No, elective courses must be graduate-level courses taken concurrently with your other core classes. They have to be taken to graduate as well.

Q: Can I re-take a course or take a class that was already waived for me as an elective?

A: Unfortunately not.

Q: How do I choose electives, anyway? How do I know what’s right for me?

A: In general, electives are specific to their program. That means that if you are in the Master of Accountancy program, all of your electives will be Accounting courses. For other programs like the MBA, you have a wide variety of different courses, but these must all be taken from the College of Business. Unfortunately, Economics courses, Psychology, and classes outside of the College of Business will not count. The MLRHR degree has a handful of exceptions to this, and a list of those courses can be found on their page here.

With that in mind, there is certainly a sea of choices for your electives. Most electives should be taken close to the end of your program, but this isn’t a hard rule if you know what you’d like to take and have the prerequisite courses completed already. For most people, choosing elective courses should be a matter of what you foresee using professionally post-graduation. Think about electives in practical terms. If you are interested in working in Marketing or Operations/ Supply Chain Management, you should search for available courses based on those interests and the specific subject you find beneficial to your career.

Your advisor can provide tips to help, but what you take should be a decision for you and how it best complements your degree of choice. Speaking to your instructors and other faculty members are also great sources of advice when choosing electives.

Q: How do I find a list of potential electives?

A: Easy, actually. Simple searches on CampusNet can yield a variety of results. The best approach is to start with the semester you are thinking about taking a course, then go by subject. Remember that some classes are offered in certain semesters and not others, so take advantage of multi-term registration and plan ahead a semester or two based on course availability.

RULES AND GUIDELINES
Q: Rules for failing courses are a little more strict, correct?

A: In general, yes. Anything lower than a C grade will result in the failure of a course. There are no D grades at the graduate level.

Q: I heard I have to have all B grades in my classes or I’m dismissed. True?

A: Yes, please contact your advisor for additional details.

Q: What about F grades?

A: The graduate catalog states clearly that if you have two failing grades then you will be dismissed.

Q: What does “dismissed” mean?

A: Being dismissed from the University prevents you from adding courses for three semesters, or one calendar year. So, if you were dismissed in the Spring semester, you will not be permitted to take classes until the Summer of the following year.

Q: A second dismissal from the University is permanent. There are no exceptions to this rule?

Q: How will I know if I’m in danger of being dismissed?

A: With these rules being stated, it is your responsibility to maintain your gpa.  Our advising office can assist you with any questions or issues that might arise during your program.
