Cleveland State Supply Chain Management students accompanied Dr. Oya Tukel and Northeast Ohio supply chain professionals to the Ohio Conference on Freight in Sandusky, Ohio on September 13th and 14th. Keynote speakers at the Ohio Conference on Freight represent finance, governments, and industry. Workshops address free trade zones, infrastructure and shale development, supply chain innovation, AND freight studies. Other features are a tour of Norfolk Southernís rail facility, a reception, roundtable discussions, and more.
Bruce McCain, Chief Investment Strategist at Key Private Bank provided the opening keynote and discussed the current economic outlook. He addressed near-term threats and opportunities in the current economic environment and added his perspective for the near future.
Students then attended a talk addressing the changing dynamics of railway shipping. The discussion explored the changing nature of railway relationships in our region and new developments in the industry due to increased investments in railway networks. Speakers included Art Arnold, Executive Director of the Ohio Rail Association, Kim Sherman, Senior Account Manager at CSX, and Gary Whitacre, CEO of Whitacre Logistics.
The final event addressed the growing need for talented professionals in Supply Chain Management. Specifically, freight transportation and logistics is experiencing a shortage in qualified labor. Speakers included David Closs, the John H. McConnell Chaired Professor of the Department of Supply Chain Management at Michigan State University, Kreigh Spahr, Program Manager of the Truck Driving Academy at Tri-C, and Laurie Thomas, Maritime Security Coordinator at the All Hazards Training Facility at the University of Findlay.
