The American Journal of Business (AJB) is a bi-annual academic journal that is published by Emerald. The AJB was created in 1985. The original member universities were in the Mid-American Conference, consequently they chose Mid-American Journal of Business as the journal title. In 2007, the name was changed to the American Journal of Business because many of its contributing authors were outside those mid-American states.
The Journal is sponsored by ten AACSB accredited universities: Ball State University, Bowling Green State University, Central Michigan University, Cleveland State University, Miami University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, the University of Toledo, the University of Akron and Western Michigan University. Each university provides a board member. The managing editor office is located at Cleveland State University, and the editor-in-chief position, also at Cleveland State University, is currently a dual appointment.
The journal aims to provide an effective medium for scholars and managers to share and discuss research findings on business and business phenomena, and it thus publishes articles that help improve understanding of business and business practices. The journal publishes discipline-based scholarship and welcomes both conceptual and empirical work. The journal also welcomes replications of empirical studies and opinion and comment from executives.

Manuscripts should be embedded in the contemporary literature, and initial review and acceptance will be predicated on: (a) clear and logical theory building for conceptual work and methodological adequacy for empirical work; (b) citation of contemporary sources; (c) relevance of the research and applications being clearly discussed; and (d) compliance with the formatting, citation, and reference style of the AJB.
Submitted articles are reviewed using a double-blind, peer review process.
