Business Career Connection

Spotlight Majors: Finance & Business Economics

Get an insider’s look at the fourth event in this series from Anna Gibson, Diversity Programs Specialist at the Monte Ahuja College of Business.

On Tuesday, February 25, 2014 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m., students, faculty, staff and business professionals gathered together in the Board Room for the fourth event in the Career Connection Series. Faculty and staff included Lesley Koskey, Academic Advisor and Oya Tukel, Interim Department Chair of Finance.  Lunch was provided and the Q&A panel discussion got started after I gave a brief overview of the program and introduced the panelists.
The panelists were eager to share their insight into the career options for students who major in Finance & Business Economics, linking the majors to specific industries and career paths. They talked about their own career paths, desired employment skill sets for a career in Finance or Business Economics, diversity in the workplace, and building a well-rounded foundation for career success. Some take-aways that the students in attendance left with include:

  • The importance of knowing how to use analytics software such as SAS
  • Knowing how to network yourself using websites such as LinkedIn and joining professional organizations; and
  • Speaking with people who work in the field you would like to have a career in.

With frequent questions from the audience, the panel discussion became an interactive conversation between the panelists and the students. After the Q&A panel discussion was over, the panelists spent some time talking to students one-on-one.

Surveys taken during the event revealed that the students who attended:

  • Have a better understanding about possible career options and employment skills necessary for this major.
  • Found that the Q&A panel discussion was useful in learning more about this major.
  • Indicated that they want to learn more about this major.
  • Now know more about diversity in the workplace than before attending.
  • Plan to attend one or more future events in the series.

We would love to hear more feedback about the event so that we can better gauge its success. If you attended, please answer this short 10-question survey:

In addition to being entered to win a CSU Bookstore gift card, students who complete the survey will also receive the assessment career skills quiz. Just make sure to give your name and email address when you fill out the survey.
