Get an insider’s look at the fifth event from Anna Gibson, Diversity Programs Specialist at the Monte Ahuja College of Business.
On Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m., students, faculty, staff and business professionals gathered together in the Board Room for the fifth event in the Career Connection Series. Those in attendance included Lesley Konkey, Academic Advisor, Juliana Capuano, Career Coordinator, and James Howell, Beta Alpha Psi President. Lunch was provided and the Q&A panel discussion got started after I gave an overview of the program and introduced the panelists.
Meet some of the panelists and participants in this video.
The panelists were eager to share their insight into the career options for students who major in Accounting. They talked about their own career paths, desired employment skill sets for a career in Accounting, diversity in the workplace, and building a well-rounded foundation for career success. Some take-aways that the students in attendance left with include:
• Developing skills such as communication, flexibility and confidence;
• The importance of knowing how to use Excel pivot tables and MS Access;
• Being aware of the global talent pool.
After the Q&A panel discussion was over, the panelists spent some time talking to students one-on-one.
Surveys taken during the event revealed that the students who attended:
•Have a better understanding about possible career options and employment skills necessary for this major.
•Found that the Q&A panel discussion was useful in learning more about this major.
•Indicated that they want to learn more about this major.
•Now know more about diversity in the workplace than before attending.
•Plan to attend one or more future events in the series.
