About the Series

This series brings to the campus outstanding speakers, performing artists, graphic artists, videos and films. There is an effort to maintain a high standard of excellence in programming and to help fill a void by presenting special programs that might not otherwise be available in the Greater Cleveland community.

Howard A. Mims Lecture, Arts and Media Series   The Black Studies Lecture, Arts and Media Series has been named the Howard A. Mims Lecture, Arts and Media Series to tribute the legacy of Dr. Howard A. Mims (1930-2002).

He was dedicated to Black Studies and served as the director of the program at Cleveland State University for a full decade (1991-2001). He defined the existing structure for Black Studies and encouraged an appreciation that the entire Greater Cleveland community was its classroom. Dr. Mims shared the treasures of Black history and culture through an understanding of interdisciplinary principles, where academicians, students and community members could come together to learn more about African, African American, and African Diaspora peoples.
