Orientation

Before Orientation: Take Your Placement Tests

Math

Math placement is required of all new students prior to attending orientation. Math placement will help your Academic Advisor determine the most appropriate math course for you to take your first two semesters.

Here are the ways that Cleveland State determines math placement:

Students with an ACT math score of 22 or higher, or SAT math score of 520 or higher are automatically placed into a college-level math class.

However, if you are planning on majoring in the following fields, you will need to take the Math Placement Test.  Testing into the calculus series of math will save you time toward graduation.

  • Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering
  • Computer Information Science
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Geology
  • Mathematics
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Physics
  • Pre-Pharmacy

Students with an ACT math score of less than 22 or SAT match score of less than 520 are required to take the Math Placement test. Once you have paid your enrollment deposit and signed up for Orientation, you can take the math placement test online, through the link in your applicant status portal by clicking view update.

If you do not have access to a computer or high-speed internet, you may complete the test at Cleveland State prior to Orientation. Please call the Placement Testing Office at 216.687.2566 for available times.

If you have taken math as a Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP) student from a university other than Cleveland State, please have a copy of your college transcript sent to Cleveland State University.

If you experience any technical problems while you are taking the test, please call the Placement Testing Office at 216.687.2566 or email mathplacement@csuohio.edu.
