"For me the true purpose of art is to bring about a heightened sense of being alive."

Robert Thurmer was born in 1953 in Vienna, Austria and moved to the US in 1973. He received a BFA from Syracuse University and an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Thurmer has curated exhibitions of contemporary art since 1981 and currently serves as the Art Gallery Director at Cleveland State University, where he also teaches Foundation, and Museology.

Thurmer is a sculptor and conceptual artist interested in the relationship between form and idea. His work includes objects, installations, and text-based 'propositions.' He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including shows at the Hudson River Museum in New York, in Germany, and in Paris, France.
