The Buddha Project

Buddha, painting by Robert Spellman and Joan Anderson.

Centers, Insight Meditation,
Zen Sesshins, the Dalai Lama in Central Park -- Since the 1950’s, Buddhism has increasingly become an integral part of the Western cultural landscape. The Buddha Project concerns itself with this question: how is the transfer of Buddhist ideas from Eastern to Western cultures expressed in contemporary visual art? These exhibitions feature contemporary visual work that engages with three aspects of Buddhist thought: images of the Buddha; reflections on Buddhist teachings, and the experience of the Buddhist community. The goal of the exhibitions is to present a body of work that will engage gallery visitors with the central question of the exhibition, while providing direct access to works of significant aesthetic merit. Selected works represent the imprint of Buddhism both as tradition and as abstract idea on our cultural landscape at this moment in time. The exhibitions are not an attempt to present a comprehensive survey; rather, they are an exploration of the subtle ways in which Buddhist ideas become discernible in artists’ creative productions.
