VISIONARIES This
exhibition represents the human encounter with mystery, spirit, and the
sacred. The visions that fill the gallery are the works of Eugene
Armistead, Aurence, Frank Bryant, Minnie Evans, "Hoffman,"
Willie Jinks, R. A. Miller, Peter J. Minchell, Royal Robertson, John H.
Toney, the Reverend Albert Wagner, and Ruby C. Williams. Their works
are diverse in both content and approach. Each artist creates his or her
own aesthetic, following the urgings of personal visions and dreams.
Some artists present us with potent images from their religious
traditions; others offer prophetic glimpses of possible future worlds.
Still others present to us images of this world, transformed by the
alchemy of the unconscious mind. Some of the visions are ethereal and
compelling; others, painful and disturbing. All are responses to a
voice, dream, or feeling that the artist could not deny. Materials and
methods vary, from crayon on paper to assemblages of common objects on
tree roots and branches. But whatever their content, media, style, or
scale, the works chosen for this exhibition represent the intersection
of the secular and the sacred, of reason and intuition. They are at once
the artists’ personal terrain and our own common ground. Jeanne
